Single Mum Serie!

Babyccino Kids – a page we love and read on a regular base. So who are the founders? There’s Courtney of course, and then there’s Esther, another mum of four. AND Emilie! She lives in Paris with her two daughters, she is a single mum and for me she is just such an inspiring person. She’s strong, smart, nice, independent and heartwarming. So of course she had to be part of our Single Mum Series!

Hi Emilie! Can you tell our readers quickly who you are and what you do?

Hi! I am one of the co-founders of Babyccino Kids an blog and online shopping portal on which we curate the best independent children brands. We founded Babyccino about 6 years ago when we all had our first children and have been writing for it and developing it every since. I also have a day job as an animation producer for a production company here in Paris.

When did you separate and how do you organise yourself since?
We separated when my second daughter was 1 year old. It was a rocky start to say the least, but we quite quickly got into a groove (we did not really have the choice ;)). I went back to work relatively quickly and at the beginning all my money went into childcare. I used daycare and nannies and babysitters. I have been quite strict about the people we have let come into the family and our nanny has been with us for 5 years now, so the girls have always had the same people around who they love and I absolutely trust.
I don’t have any family in Paris so I also relied very heavily on friends, who stepped in to help out in a phenomenal way.

I’ve learned that managing a challenge like being a single mum can make you really strong and proud, do you agree? What would you say are the Pros and Cons of being a single mum in general?
I think that the pros are that whatever I say goes and my rules are implemented, no one second guesses me, I can trust my gut. My girls and I are incredibly close and work like a team. I also think that they have grown up to be very independent children for their age. I am proud of what I have achieved on my own and it has certainly made me strong. The cons are the loneliness and the loss of a comrade in arms. I feel it the most when big decisions need to be made for the family and those responsibilities lay squarely on my shoulders alone.

In Germany, the system doesn’t really reflect on new family forms, being a married coupled is still an advantage. What about France? Do you feel treated adequatly by the system?
I am very lucky to live in France and even better to live in Paris where state-run childcare is inexpensive and good. School starts at the age of 3 and kids are taking care of from 8.30-6.30 so it makes it a lot easier for mothers to work and single mothers to survive. I honestly am not sure how I would have been able to work full time to support my family, advance in my career and juggle a family, without the French childcare system. All my my female friends  work and support their families, single or not, which I strongly feel that this should be possible in 2015. Now, I have utmost respect for stay at home mothers as I think every family needs to find a the right system that works for them. I do feel very strongly that this should be a choice and not something imposed on women (and families) by a state system.

Also, I often have the feeling, single mums rather hide than go out there and show their family life, whereas all the mummys on Instagram for example, seem to be in a classic relationship. Do you think being single is sort of a stigma, and what can we do do get over that?

That’s an interesting question. Instagram is a funny thing as everyone presents a curated version of their lives which looks perfect to the outside (of course that is not the whole picture). Single parents don’t really fit into the mould, but I don’t know if there is a stigma attached to it. But I do think you are right. Instagram does celebrate the perfect life, the perfect family and the perfect children. The Instagram mums who are famous for being mums have strongly classic family set ups and that is why they are followed and successful. I don’t fit into that mould but neither do I feel that this is the only way of life that is aspirational!
Your are so right ;) Thank you very much!
